Olfactory receptor family 52 subfamily A member 5 (OR52A5) is a human G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) that functions primarily in the olfactory system, mediating the detection of volatile odorant molecules in the nose and initiating neuronal signals that are perceived as smell. OR52A5 has a canonical 7-transmembrane domain structure typical of GPCRs and is part of the largest gene family in the human genome. Several members of the human OR52 family, including OR52A5, are known to specifically recognize carboxylic acids as odorants. Upon activation by an odorant, OR52A5 signals via G proteins (notably either Gαolf or Gαs, stimulating adenylyl cyclase activity and cAMP production) to trigger an olfactory response[1][2][3][5][7]. There is no direct evidence supporting a primary role for OR52A5 in non-sensory diseases, nor is it a current therapeutic target for drugs, biomarkers, or clinical safety concerns. The gene is located on chromosome 11p15.4 and is expressed in olfactory epithelial tissue[3][5][7][8].
