Overview

OR52B3P is a member of the human olfactory receptor gene family that is classified as a pseudogene. Olfactory receptor pseudogenes typically arise by mutations that disrupt the open reading frame, leading to the loss of protein-coding potential. OR52B3P does not encode a functional olfactory receptor protein and is not believed to participate in odorant recognition or signal transduction in humans. While intact olfactory receptor genes are G protein-coupled receptors involved in smell perception, most human olfactory receptor genes are nonfunctional pseudogenes, reflecting evolutionary loss of olfactory capability. There is no evidence that OR52B3P has a biological or disease-relevant role in humans. Although some olfactory receptor pseudogenes in other species can retain "pseudo-pseudogene" function when translated by unusual mechanisms, such as stop-codon readthrough (as seen in Drosophila), there is no current evidence for such a mechanism or function for OR52B3P in humans. Functional olfactory receptors belong to the GPCR molecular class and are involved in chemosensation, but pseudogenes like OR52B3P typically have no biological activity. OR52B3P is not considered a therapeutic target, is not a biomarker, and has no known pharmacology.
