Olfactory receptor family 52 subfamily E member 7 pseudogene (OR52E7P)

Target
OR52E7P
Molecular classification
Pseudogene, G protein-coupled receptor (family association only; the functional gene would belong to this class but this locus does not produce a receptor protein)

Overview

Olfactory receptor family 52 subfamily E member 7 pseudogene (OR52E7P) is a human pseudogene found in the olfactory receptor gene family. Olfactory receptors are typically responsible for detecting odorant molecules in the nose and initiating neuronal responses that contribute to the sense of smell. However, pseudogenes such as OR52E7P arise from mutations (nonsense or frameshifts) in what were formerly functional genes, resulting in loss of protein-coding potential and, therefore, function. OR52E7P does not encode an active receptor protein, and no biological or pathological function has been described. It is classified among the largest gene families in the genome—olfactory receptors—but is not relevant for therapeutic targeting or biomarker use.
