Olfactory receptor family 52 subfamily I member 2 (OR52I2) is a G protein-coupled receptor located in the nasal epithelium, responsible for recognizing specific odorant molecules and initiating a neuronal response leading to the perception of smell. These receptors have a characteristic seven-transmembrane domain structure, similar to many other GPCRs, allowing them to mediate signal transduction via G proteins. The OR52I2 gene is a single-exon gene, part of the largest gene family in the human genome. Functional roles are restricted to the olfactory system, and disease association appears limited. Olfactory receptors recognize a range of odorant molecules; individual odorants can activate multiple ORs. The activation mechanism involves binding of an odorant, conformational change in the receptor, activation of a specific G protein (G_olf), increased intracellular cAMP, and opening of ion channels. The nomenclature of OR genes/proteins is organism-specific. There is currently no evidence of therapeutic targeting or drug modulation for OR52I2.
