Olfactory receptor family 52 subfamily J member 3 (OR52J3) is a human protein encoded by the OR52J3 gene. It belongs to the olfactory receptor family, the largest group of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) in the human genome. OR52J3 is a seven-transmembrane domain receptor expressed in the olfactory epithelium, where it binds specific odorant molecules in the nose to initiate neuronal signals that contribute to the perception of smell. Like other olfactory receptors, OR52J3 mediates its signal by activating heterotrimeric G proteins, triggering a cascade that results in olfactory signal transduction. There is no evidence of drugs targeting this receptor, nor established biomarker or safety data. OR52J3 has been mentioned in association with Birk-Barel syndrome in gene-disease databases, but its direct causal involvement remains undefined.
