Olfactory receptor family 52 subfamily K member 2 (OR52K2) is a member of the large olfactory receptor family, which belongs to class A G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) and has a characteristic 7-transmembrane domain architecture[5][7]. OR52K2 is expressed in the olfactory epithelium, where it binds specific odorant molecules, triggering G protein (typically Gα_olf)-mediated signaling cascades that result in the perception of smell[5][6][7]. Olfactory receptors like OR52K2 are encoded by single coding-exon genes and contribute to the diversity of odor recognition. Although primarily studied for their role in the sense of smell, olfactory receptors may also be expressed in extranasal tissues, with emerging evidence suggesting possible roles in nonolfactory physiological processes[4][5]. There are no current therapeutic agents targeting OR52K2, and it is mainly regarded as a molecular sensor rather than a druggable disease target.
Odorant binding leads to G protein-mediated activation of downstream signaling pathways, primarily increasing cAMP in olfactory sensory neurons[5][6][7]
