Overview

Olfactory receptor family 52 subfamily P member 2 pseudogene (OR52P2P) is a human pseudogene classified within the olfactory receptor family, subfamily 52, member P2[2][4][5]. Olfactory receptors, if functional, are G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) involved in detecting odorant molecules in the nose to trigger the perception of smell[2][4][5]. However, OR52P2P is a pseudogene, which means it contains sequence disruptions (such as premature stop codons) and does not produce a functional olfactory receptor protein[2][4][5]. Pseudogenes of olfactory receptors are common due to genomic evolution and loss of function associated with shifts in ecological niche or reduced necessity for olfactory signaling in humans[3]. There is no evidence that OR52P2P encodes a functional protein, nor is it recognized as a therapeutic target or associated with disease, interacting drugs, or biomarker status[2][4][5].
