Olfactory receptor family 52 subfamily R member 1 (OR52R1) is a member of the large family of olfactory receptors, which detect odorant molecules in the nasal epithelium and initiate neuronal responses that result in the perception of smell[5][3]. Like other olfactory receptors, OR52R1 is a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) with seven transmembrane domains, encoded typically by a single exon. These receptors recognize a diverse range of odorant chemicals and mediate their effects via G protein-mediated transduction pathways[5][3]. The OR52R1 gene is described as a segregating pseudogene, meaning that its functional status varies in the human population: in some individuals, it may be intact and encode a functional receptor, while in others, certain alleles may be nonfunctional[3]. Olfactory receptors, including OR52R1, make up the largest gene family in the human genome and contribute to olfactory diversity among individuals, but they are not currently considered targets for therapeutic intervention[5][3].
