Overview

Olfactory receptor family 52 subfamily U member 1 pseudogene (OR52U1P) is classified as a pseudogene within the human olfactory receptor gene family. Unlike functional olfactory receptor genes, pseudogenes typically possess disruptive mutations and do not encode active protein products or mediate cellular functions. OR52U1P does not participate in signal transduction or odorant recognition and is not considered a therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, transporter, or biomarker. The designation as a pseudogene indicates loss of coding potential—there is no evidence of physiological or pharmacological activity for OR52U1P. In human genetics, olfactory receptor pseudogenes (including OR52U1P) are common due to the dynamic evolution and relaxed selective pressure associated with odorant receptor gene families. Observations of "pseudo-pseudogenes" (pseudogenes which may encode functional proteins in other organisms) are emerging in some animal models (e.g., Drosophila), but there is no evidence of such readthrough or functional activity for OR52U1P in humans. OR52U1P remains annotated as a pseudogene and not a viable molecular target.
