Overview

Olfactory receptor family 56 subfamily A member 1 (OR56A1) is a protein-coding gene in humans encoding a member of the olfactory receptor group, which belong to the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily[1][4][5][6]. Like other olfactory receptors, OR56A1 features a 7-transmembrane domain structure and is responsible for detecting odorant molecules within the nasal olfactory epithelium, initiating a neuronal response that leads to the perception of smell[1][4][5]. Olfactory receptors typically operate via G protein-mediated signal transduction pathways. While primarily involved in chemosensory signal transduction, olfactory receptors—including OR56A1—can be ectopically expressed in various nonolfactory tissues, although their biological roles outside the olfactory system are largely undecided and require further research[5][3]. OR56A1 has been associated with Bardet-Biedl syndrome 9, but its involvement in human disease is otherwise uncharacterized and no direct pharmacological drugs or therapeutic interventions target this receptor at present[1][5]. There are no established mechanisms of action for medical modulation, known biomarkers based on OR56A1, or reported therapeutic safety concerns.
