Overview

Olfactory receptor family 56 subfamily A member 3 (OR56A3) is a protein coding gene and part of the large olfactory receptor (OR) family, which encodes G protein-coupled receptors responsible for odor recognition in the nasal olfactory epithelium[1][2][4]. These receptors feature a canonical seven-transmembrane domain architecture and mediate neuronal responses to odorants by triggering G protein-mediated signal transduction pathways[1][2]. Olfactory receptors are among the largest gene families in the human genome and are typically expressed in olfactory sensory neurons, although some may be expressed in other tissues[4]. Although OR56A3's specific ligands and roles beyond olfaction are not well characterized, the olfactory receptor family overall is increasingly recognized for potential roles outside traditional smell perception, including in other tissues, but has not been directly linked to major therapeutic or biomarker roles at present[2][4].

Safety considerations

Olfactory receptors as a class have low disease association and are not current therapeutic targets; challenges include low tissue expression and lack of characterized ligands for most family members[4]
