Overview

Olfactory receptor family 56 subfamily B member 1 (OR56B1) is a protein belonging to the large olfactory receptor superfamily, which in humans functions predominantly in the nasal epithelium for odorant detection. These receptors are G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) with a canonical seven-transmembrane domain structure, responsible for recognizing odorant molecules and initiating neuronal responses resulting in the perception of smell. The olfactory receptor gene family, to which OR56B1 belongs, is the largest in the human genome. While OR56B1 is primarily recognized for its role in olfaction and signal transduction, there is currently no evidence for direct involvement in disease or interactions with therapeutic drugs. OR56B1 is sometimes referred to as a pseudogene (OR56B1P); this nomenclature can indicate lack of functional protein-coding activity, but the exact functional annotation varies between databases. The family of olfactory receptors may have extranasal roles, and dysregulation of some GPCR olfactory receptors has been implicated in non-olfactory processes, though not specifically for OR56B1.
