Overview

Olfactory receptor family 56 subfamily B member 4 (OR56B4) is a human protein encoded by the OR56B4 gene, classified as a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) within the large olfactory receptor family. OR56B4 is located on chromosome 11 and is primarily expressed in the olfactory epithelium of the nose, where it interacts with odorant molecules, triggering G protein-mediated signal transduction that leads to the perception of smell. Olfactory receptors share a characteristic 7-transmembrane domain structure and are responsible for converting chemical odorants into neuronal responses. While olfactory receptors as a group are being studied for potential roles in non-olfactory tissues and disease, OR56B4 itself remains primarily relevant to sensory perception and is not an established therapeutic target or biomarker.
