Overview

Olfactory receptor family 6 subfamily B member 3 (OR6B3) is a member of the olfactory receptor family, which comprises G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) with a characteristic seven-transmembrane domain structure[2][4][5]. OR6B3 is expressed most abundantly in non-olfactory neuronal tissues, such as the human retina, trigeminal ganglia, and dorsal root ganglia, rather than the olfactory epithelium[1]. It participates in the recognition of volatile odorant molecules and initiates neuronal responses via G protein-mediated signaling cascades, leading to signal transduction associated with sensory perception[2][3]. Although some olfactory receptors are drug targets for chemical sensing technologies, there are currently no known drugs specifically interacting with OR6B3[3]. Its functional roles outside of classical olfaction are being investigated, and ectopic expression in the retina suggests possible importance in neuronal signaling outside traditional smell processing[1]. There are no major safety concerns reported, and its utility as a biomarker remains unestablished.
