Overview

Olfactory receptor family 6 subfamily C member 1 (OR6C1) is a member of the large family of olfactory receptors, which are G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) characterized by a seven-transmembrane domain structure[2][4]. Olfactory receptors are responsible for the detection of odorant molecules in the nasal epithelium, initiating G protein-mediated signal transduction that results in the perception of smell[2][3][4]. The gene encoding OR6C1 is a single-exon gene and shares structural homology with other neurotransmitter and hormone receptors[2][4]. Like other olfactory receptors, OR6C1 is primarily involved in olfactory signaling pathways[2]. To date, there is no evidence that OR6C1 is a direct drug target or that it is used in any therapeutic context, though research into olfactory GPCRs is ongoing for possible new drug discovery avenues[3]. No established role in nonolfactory diseases, drug interactions, or biomarkers is documented for this receptor[2][3][4]. Key reference identifiers include: UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot Q96RD1, HGNC: 8355, NCBI Gene: 390321, Ensembl: ENSG00000205330[2].
