Overview

Olfactory receptor family 6 subfamily C member 6 (OR6C6) is a member of the olfactory receptor gene family, which constitutes the largest gene cluster in the human genome. OR6C6 encodes a G protein-coupled receptor found in the nasal olfactory epithelium, responsible for detecting specific odorant molecules and initiating signal transduction pathways that underlie the sense of smell. These receptors share a seven-transmembrane domain structure typical of GPCRs and act by interacting with odorants, causing conformational changes that activate G proteins and generate neuronal signals. Although primarily involved in olfaction, some olfactory receptors are reported to have nonolfactory functions in extranasal tissues, but specific extranasal roles for OR6C6 remain unclear. There are no drugs currently known to act on OR6C6, and it is not recognized as a drug target for therapeutic intervention or a clinical biomarker. The only disease association noted is with atrial septal defect 9, but the evidence is limited and not well established.
