Overview

Olfactory receptor family 6 subfamily C member 69 pseudogene (OR6C69P) is a genetic sequence annotated as a pseudogene within the olfactory receptor gene family. Olfactory receptors, when functional, are G protein-coupled receptors responsible for detecting odorant molecules and mediating the sense of smell. However, as a pseudogene, OR6C69P contains mutations (such as premature stop codons or frame-shifts) that prevent expression of a functional protein. Pseudogenes arise due to reduced evolutionary pressure to maintain receptor function, often in response to species-specific changes in odor environment or relevance. While rare examples exist in some species where pseudogenes may be “reactivated” via translational readthrough (as seen in Drosophila), there is no evidence OR6C69P encodes a functional protein or has biological roles in humans. Thus, this locus is not considered a drug target or clinically relevant biomarker.
