Overview

Olfactory receptor family 6 subfamily D member 1 pseudogene (OR6D1P) is a human pseudogene related to the large family of olfactory receptor genes, which are G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) responsible for detecting odorant molecules and initiating neuronal responses that produce the perception of smell. OR6D1P, however, is classified as a pseudogene: it is a non-functional genomic DNA sequence similar to a protein-coding gene that has been rendered non-coding by mutations. As such, it does not produce a functional protein and has no known physiological or pathological role, drug interactions, or utility as a biomarker. The functional olfactory receptor genes remain important in the sense of smell, but OR6D1P itself is not expressed as a receptor. The presence of many pseudogenes in olfactory receptor families reflects the low evolutionary pressure to conserve all olfactory receptor genes in humans, as not all detected odors are relevant to human fitness.
