Olfactory receptor family 6 subfamily K member 4 pseudogene (OR6K4P)

Target
OR6K4P
Molecular classification
Pseudogene, Olfactory receptor pseudogene, Class A G protein–coupled receptor family (by homology), 7-transmembrane receptor (by homology to functional olfactory receptors)
01

Overview

Olfactory receptor family 6 subfamily K member 4 pseudogene (OR6K4P) is a human gene classified as a **pseudogene** of the olfactory receptor family, meaning it arose from a functional olfactory receptor gene but has acquired disabling mutations such as frame-shifts or premature stop codons, and is not translated into a functional receptor protein[1][2][3][5]. Olfactory receptor genes typically encode G protein-coupled receptors that detect odorants and mediate smell perception in the olfactory epithelium, but the OR6K4P locus is non-functional[3][4][5]. Pseudogenes, including most olfactory receptor pseudogenes in humans, are generally not expressed as proteins and lack biological or disease roles[3][4]; thus, OR6K4P is not considered a therapeutic target nor a biomarker of clinical utility.

Other names
OR6K4POlfactory receptor, family 6, subfamily K, member 4 pseudogene
02

Biological functions

Other (No direct biological function; typical olfactory receptor family members are involved in G protein-coupled odorant signal transduction, but pseudogenes do not usually encode functional proteins)
03

Disease associations

Other (no evidence or known disease association; pseudogenes generally do not have pathogenic roles)
