Overview

Olfactory receptor family 6 subfamily M member 1 (OR6M1) is a member of the large G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily that is typically involved in the detection of odorant molecules in the olfactory epithelium, initiating signal transduction for the perception of smell. OR6M1 is classified as an orphan olfactory receptor, meaning its endogenous ligand and full physiological role remain unknown. Recent research has identified OR6M1 expression in breast cancer cells (MCF-7), where it can act as a functional receptor; experimental ligand screening uncovered anthraquinone as an agonist and rutin as an antagonist of OR6M1. Activation of OR6M1 by anthraquinone elevates intracellular calcium levels in transfected cells, which correlates with reduced MCF-7 cell viability in vitro, suggesting a possible anticancer role for OR6M1 agonists. As such, OR6M1 is considered a potential therapeutic target for cancer research, though its precise biological and clinical relevance beyond experimental systems is still unclear[1].
