Overview

Olfactory receptor family 6 subfamily M member 3 pseudogene (OR6M3P) is classified as a pseudogene in the human genome. It is related to the olfactory receptor gene family, which typically encodes G protein-coupled receptors responsible for the detection of odorant molecules, leading to the perception of smell. Olfactory receptor pseudogenes, including OR6M3P, are non-functional DNA sequences that have accumulated mutations (such as premature stop codons or frameshifts) which prevent them from producing functional receptor proteins. In general, pseudogenes like OR6M3P do not have protein-coding capabilities, are not considered therapeutic targets, and have no established roles in disease or drug interaction. Although rare exceptions exist where some pseudogenes produce functional proteins via translational read-through (as demonstrated in invertebrates such as Drosophila species)[3][4][5], in the case of the human OR6M3P, there is no evidence of such function[1][2].
