Overview

Olfactory receptor family 6 subfamily Q member 1 (OR6Q1) is a protein-coding gene product that functions as a G protein-coupled receptor in the olfactory system. It recognizes and binds odorant molecules in the nose, initiating a signal transduction cascade that sends neuronal signals to the brain, resulting in the perception of smell. These receptors are characterized by seven transmembrane domains and are among the largest gene families in the human genome. The specific function and ligand selectivity of OR6Q1 itself are not well characterized; however, other olfactory receptors with similar structure bind small, volatile molecules and feature significant diversity and specificity[1][2][5]. OR6Q1 may be a segregating pseudogene, with some individuals possessing a functional variant and others a non-functional one[1]. It is not known to play a role in disease or as a pharmacological target.
