Olfactory receptor family 6 subfamily V member 1 (OR6V1) is a protein encoded by the OR6V1 gene in humans and is part of the largest gene family in the genome, responsible for the detection of odorants and the initiation of neuronal signaling that leads to the perception of smell[1][3]. OR6V1 belongs to the class A G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily, sharing the classical 7-transmembrane domain architecture with other neurotransmitter and hormone receptors[1][5][6]. It operates by recognizing odorant molecules within the nasal epithelium, engaging in G-protein signaling to transduce chemical signals into electrical impulses that are relayed to the brain[4]. While OR6V1’s primary biological function is limited to olfactory signaling, olfactory receptors broadly have been implicated in additional, still poorly understood, physiological processes beyond the nasal cavity[5][7]. Currently, there is no evidence to support a role for OR6V1 in disease pathology, pharmacological targeting, or use as a biomarker.
