Overview

Olfactory receptor family 7 subfamily A member 17 (OR7A17) is a member of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily, characterized by a 7-transmembrane domain structure and encoded by a single exon gene[1][3][4]. It is primarily involved in the recognition of odorant molecules in the nose and initiates neuronal responses to trigger the perception of smell[1][3][4][6]. Recently, its expression outside the olfactory system, notably in human keratinocytes, has been reported, where it modulates cell proliferation via calcium signaling and may be influenced by retinoic acid pathways, suggesting emerging roles in skin physiology and disease[1]. OR7A17 is specifically tuned to detect (-)-Ambroxide, a major scent component of ambergris[5].
