Overview

Olfactory receptor family 7 subfamily C member 1 (OR7C1) is a G protein-coupled receptor that is part of the largest gene family in the human genome[1][2]. These receptors are primarily responsible for recognizing and binding odorant molecules in the nose, initiating neuronal signals that lead to the perception of smell[1][7]. OR7C1, like other olfactory receptors, exhibits a 7-transmembrane domain structure characteristic of many GPCRs and is encoded by a single-exon gene[3][4]. While its canonical role is in olfactory sensory neurons, OR7C1 (and other olfactory receptors) can be ectopically expressed in non-olfactory tissues, including cancers, where their expression has been linked to tumor cell differentiation and prognosis. OR7C1 has been reported as a biomarker in colorectal cancer, underscoring its possible significance in cancer diagnostics and stratification[2][5]. No known drugs currently target OR7C1 directly, and its mechanism involves classic GPCR-mediated signaling cascades including cAMP regulation following odorant binding[1][2].
