Olfactory receptor family 7 subfamily D member 4 (OR7D4) is a member of the largest human gene family encoding olfactory receptors, which are G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) found in the nasal epithelium and responsible for the detection of odorant molecules that trigger neuronal signals and smell perception[2][4]. OR7D4 is specifically known to be activated by steroid-derived odorants such as androstenone and androstadienone, and functional genetic variants of OR7D4 profoundly influence both the intensity and hedonic quality of these odors in humans[2][3]. This receptor demonstrates variability in function across primate species and individuals, underlying differences in how people perceive specific odors and possibly affecting eating behaviors and socioemotional responses[2][3]. OR7D4 exhibits the typical seven-transmembrane domain architecture of GPCRs and mediates signal transduction via G protein pathways in response to its ligands[2][4]. OR7D4 is not considered a therapeutic drug target nor is it associated with common disease roles or direct biomarker or safety concern applications in clinical practice[2][4][1].
