Olfactory receptor genes encode G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) that mediate the detection of odorants in the olfactory epithelium, but pseudogenes like OR7E163P are considered non-functional due to the presence of mutations (such as premature stop codons, insertions, or deletions) that prevent the expression of a functional protein.
