Olfactory receptor family 7 subfamily E member 2 pseudogene (OR7E2P) is a pseudogene that belongs to the large olfactory receptor gene family, which typically encodes G protein-coupled receptors involved in detecting odorant molecules. Unlike typical olfactory receptor genes, OR7E2P is a nonfunctional, non-protein-coding genomic element; it contains sequence similarity to active olfactory receptor genes but lacks the ability to encode a functional receptor protein due to disabling mutations such as frameshifts or stop codons. Despite being a pseudogene, similar loci in the genome can sometimes be transcribed into noncoding RNAs, which in some cases may regulate the expression of related genes through RNA-mediated mechanisms, including acting as competitive endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs) or microRNA decoys. There is no direct evidence that OR7E2P is a therapeutic target, nor are there drugs that interact specifically with this locus, and it is not used as a biomarker or associated with any established disease risk. The literature does not report significant roles or safety concerns specific to OR7E2P, but pseudogenes as a class are increasingly recognized for their potential biological regulatory roles, including roles in cancer biology through regulation of gene expression.
