The olfactory receptor family 7 subfamily E member 83 pseudogene (OR7E83P) is a non-protein-coding genomic DNA sequence classified as a pseudogene in humans. Although it is a member of the large olfactory receptor family (which comprises G protein-coupled receptors that mediate the detection of odorants), this specific locus does not produce a functional receptor protein due to disabling mutations. The original olfactory receptors play an essential role in recognizing odorant molecules and initiating neuronal signaling via G protein-mediated transduction, but pseudogenes like OR7E83P are nonfunctional remnants of these gene families.
