Overview

Olfactory receptor family 7 subfamily G member 1 (OR7G1) is a human protein encoded by the OR7G1 gene and functions as an odorant receptor in the nasal olfactory epithelium. Like other olfactory receptors, it is a member of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily and possesses the classic 7-transmembrane domain structure. OR7G1 interacts with odorant molecules to initiate G protein-mediated signaling pathways that trigger the perception of smell in the brain. Olfactory receptors, including OR7G1, represent the largest gene family in the human genome and allow detection of a wide spectrum of odorant molecules—each receptor typically responds to multiple odorants and vice versa. While olfactory GPCRs have been studied structurally (notably OR51E2), OR7G1's specific ligands and functions remain to be elucidated, and there are currently no established drug interactions or disease-specific biomarkers recognized for this receptor. Though olfactory receptors may have minor expression outside olfactory tissues, the principal known function of OR7G1 is mediating the sense of smell.
