Target intelligence / Profile preview
Olfactory receptor family 8 subfamily A member 2 pseudogene (OR8A2P) is a human genomic sequence with high similarity to olfactory receptor genes but contains disruptive mutations and does not produce a functional protein. Olfactory receptors as a family belong to the G-protein-coupled receptor superfamily and, when functional, are responsible for the recognition of odorant molecules and the initiation of neuronal signals associated with smell. However, this specific sequence is a pseudogene, indicating it is a nonfunctional remnant and is not involved in odorant signal transduction[1][4][5]. Human olfactory receptor gene families contain many pseudogenes due to the low selection pressure to maintain receptors that no longer serve a survival function[3][5][6]. Some pseudogenes in other species may occasionally maintain residual or regulatory function, but there is no evidence for this in the case of OR8A2P in humans[1][5]. The phenomenon of "pseudo-pseudogenes" (pseudogenes that can be functional due to translational readthrough in specific species or contexts) has been reported in Drosophila but not for human OR8A2P[3][5][6]. OR8A2P is correctly identified as a non-coding olfactory receptor pseudogene in humans, with no known function, disease association, or drug interactions, and is not a therapeutic target[1][4][5].
