Olfactory receptor family 8 subfamily A member 3 pseudogene (OR8A3P) is a genomic locus classified as a pseudogene, meaning it is a DNA sequence similar to known protein-coding genes (in this case, olfactory receptors, which are G protein-coupled receptors) but does not encode a functional protein. Olfactory receptors are normally responsible for odor detection and signal transduction via G protein activation, but many olfactory receptor genes in humans exist as pseudogenes due to mutations that prevent functional expression. OR8A3P contains sequence homology to olfactory receptors but is not reported to exert any biological function nor to participate in disease mechanisms. There is no evidence in current genomic annotation or literature that OR8A3P (unlike rare pseudogene exceptions) is expressed as a functional protein or involved in therapeutic targeting.
