Overview

Olfactory receptor family 8 subfamily B member 10 pseudogene (OR8B10P) is a member of the large olfactory receptor gene family in humans, which typically encodes G protein-coupled receptors involved in odor detection and neuronal signal transduction[1][2]. OR8B10P, however, is classified as a pseudogene, meaning it has lost its functional capacity due to disabling mutations and does not produce a functional protein product in humans[1][3][4]. Olfactory receptor pseudogenes arise because of the dynamic evolutionary turnover of sensory genes, with many rendered non-functional when their encoded cues are no longer relevant for survival or when redundancy allows for gene loss[3][4]. In rare cases in other species, stop-codon containing olfactory receptor pseudogenes can still be translated into functional proteins via mechanisms like translational readthrough, but there is no evidence this occurs for OR8B10P in humans[3][4].
