Overview

Olfactory receptor family 8 subfamily B member 12 (OR8B12) is a member of the large family of human olfactory receptors, which are G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) characterized by a 7-transmembrane domain structure[1][3][8]. OR8B12 is encoded by a single exon gene located on chromosome 11[7], and, like other olfactory receptors, interacts with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate a neuronal response that contributes to the perception of smell[1][2][8]. Olfactory receptors belong to the class A (rhodopsin-like) GPCR superfamily. While the main function of OR8B12 is presumed to be olfactory signal transduction, olfactory receptors have also been detected in non-olfactory tissues, suggesting possible roles outside the olfactory system, although specific functions or disease associations for OR8B12 have not been established[2]. There are no known drugs or approved therapeutic uses targeting OR8B12, and no reported safety concerns associated with this receptor in clinical settings[4][2][8].
