Overview

Olfactory receptor family 8 subfamily B member 2 (OR8B2) is a member of the olfactory receptor gene family, which constitutes the largest family of GPCRs in the genome. Olfactory receptors, including OR8B2, are responsible for interacting with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate neuronal responses that result in the perception of smell. Like other olfactory receptors, OR8B2 is derived from a single coding-exon gene and shares the seven transmembrane domain structure characteristic of neurotransmitter and hormone receptors. These receptors recognize odorants and mediate downstream G protein signaling that ultimately transmits sensory information to the brain. OR8B2 has several recognized aliases, mostly reflecting historical or alternate nomenclature, but its main function is as an odorant receptor facilitating olfactory signal transduction. There are no known therapeutic drugs, biomarkers, or safety concerns associated with OR8B2. The gene/protein nomenclature and details provided are accurate and complete per current genetic and molecular biology databases. If greater clinical roles or disease associations become established in future, these may be updated; currently, this target's function pertains solely to olfaction.
