Overview

Olfactory receptor family 8 subfamily B member 4 (OR8B4) is a member of the large family of olfactory receptors, which are G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) expressed in the olfactory epithelium and responsible for the initiation of neuronal responses to odorant molecules, ultimately resulting in the perception of smells[1][2][3][8]. Like other olfactory receptors, OR8B4 possesses a canonical structure featuring seven transmembrane domains and mediates signal transduction via activation of G proteins[2][5][8]. Notably, OR8B4 is considered a segregating pseudogene in humans—some individuals harbor a functional gene variant capable of encoding a full-length receptor protein, while in others, the gene contains alterations predicted to abolish function[1]. There is currently no evidence for therapeutic utility, disease association, or targeting by any approved or experimental drugs. Its primary biological role, when functional, is restricted to olfactory signal detection[1][8].
