Olfactory receptor family 8 subfamily D member 4 (OR8D4)

Target
OR8D4
Molecular classification
G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR), Receptor, Odorant receptor (a subclass of GPCRs)
01

Overview

Olfactory receptor family 8 subfamily D member 4 (OR8D4) is a member of the G protein-coupled receptor superfamily that recognizes and binds odorant molecules in the nasal epithelium, initiating a G protein-mediated signal transduction cascade that triggers the perception of smell. It possesses a canonical seven-transmembrane domain structure typical of GPCRs, with specificity for odorant binding and signal transmission. Unlike many other GPCRs, it is not known to be a direct therapeutic target and has only marginal disease associations, primarily in olfactory perception. There is currently no evidence for drug interaction, biomarker utility, or substantive safety concerns associated with OR8D4 in therapeutic contexts.

Mechanism of action

Not applicable (no drugs directly modulate OR8D4; mechanistically, odorants activate receptor via G protein pathway). For theoretical modulation: Agonist binding leads to conformational change, G protein activation, downstream signaling via cAMP

03

Biological functions

Signal transduction (mediates odorant-triggered neuronal responses)Odorant binding (recognition of chemical stimuli contributing to sense of smell)
04

Disease associations

Color agnosia (very limited human association; not a major therapeutic or disease target as per current data)Other (no robust evidence for cancer, inflammation, neurodegenerative disease, cardiovascular disease, or infection in current molecular/pathophysiological context)
05

Safety considerations

None are documented, as OR8D4 is not a therapeutic target in clinical practiceConsidered biologically safe and non-pathogenic in humans
06

Interacting drugs

None specifically known (no annotated drugs or pharmacological agents with defined interaction for OR8D4; olfactory receptors in general are not known drug targets)
07

Biomarkers

None are currently recognized for patient selection or monitoring efficacy (no clinical biomarker use for OR8D4 or general olfactory receptor targeting)
