Olfactory receptor family 8 subfamily F member 1 pseudogene (OR8F1P) is a non-functional DNA sequence in human olfactory receptor gene family. Pseudogenes like OR8F1P typically result from mutations that disrupt their protein-coding ability, often through premature stop codons or frame shifts, and thus do not produce functional receptor proteins[1][2][3][4][5][6]. Olfactory receptors themselves usually function as G protein-coupled receptors mediating detection of odorant molecules and signal transduction in olfaction, but the pseudogene form has no known biological function, disease role, or therapeutic relevance in humans[1][3][5][6]. In other species, rare cases exist where olfactory receptor pseudogenes may retain or regain function via mechanisms such as stop codon readthrough[3][4], but there is no evidence that human OR8F1P is functional or has clinical significance.
