Overview

Olfactory receptor family 8 subfamily G member 1 (OR8G1) is a member of the olfactory receptor family, the largest family of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) in the human genome. OR8G1 encodes a receptor with a 7-transmembrane domain structure responsible for recognizing odorant molecules in the nose and triggering the perception of smell via G protein-mediated transduction. This gene is classified as a polymorphic pseudogene: some individuals possess a functional allele that encodes the full-length protein, while others have a non-functional allele due to an early stop codon and a 3' end deletion. Olfactory receptors are primarily responsible for chemosensation in the nasal olfactory epithelium. There is increasing evidence that olfactory receptors, in general, can be expressed in non-olfactory tissues and may have physiological and possibly pathological roles outside of smell, though no disease or drug interaction is reported specifically for OR8G1.
