Olfactory receptor family 8 subfamily G member 7 pseudogene (OR8G7P)

Target
OR8G7P
Molecular classification
Pseudogene, Classically belongs to the olfactory receptor family (G protein-coupled receptors), but as a pseudogene, it does not code for a functional receptor protein in humans

Overview

Olfactory receptor family 8 subfamily G member 7 pseudogene (OR8G7P) is a human gene annotated as a pseudogene of the olfactory receptor (OR) superfamily. Olfactory receptors, when functional, interact with odorant molecules in the nose and mediate the sense of smell through G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) signaling. The human genome contains hundreds of olfactory receptor genes, but more than half, including OR8G7P, are classified as pseudogenes—non-functional due to inactivating mutations[2]. Pseudogenes typically do not produce active proteins, do not contribute to druggability, and usually lack therapeutic or biomarker roles[2][4]. In some species and rare cases, certain olfactory "pseudogenes" can be functionally expressed due to translational read-through of premature stop codons, but this phenomenon has not been described for OR8G7P in humans[4][1][6]. Overall, OR8G7P is not a target for therapeutic intervention and has no recognized biological function or associated disease role in humans[2][4].
