Overview

Olfactory receptor family 8 subfamily H member 1 (OR8H1) is a **protein-coding gene encoding a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR)** expressed primarily in the olfactory epithelium, responsible for detecting odorant molecules and initiating neuronal responses that trigger the perception of smell[1][2]. Like other olfactory receptors, OR8H1 possesses a seven-transmembrane domain structure and activates signal transduction via G protein-mediated pathways upon odorant binding[1][2]. Although classically restricted to sensory tissues, OR8H1 and other olfactory receptors have been found ectopically expressed in non-olfactory tissues, including certain cancers such as breast carcinoma, where their expression may influence processes like tumor stemness, differentiation, and clonal heterogeneity[3]. OR8H1 belongs to the largest gene family in the human genome, is typical of Class II olfactory receptors, and its precise ligand specificity and detailed physiological roles outside olfaction remain incompletely characterized[1][3]. There are currently no known therapeutic drugs or established biomarker uses related specifically to OR8H1[1][3].
