Overview

Olfactory receptor family 8 subfamily H member 2 (OR8H2) is a human protein belonging to the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily[3]. OR8H2 is encoded by a single exon gene and is part of the largest gene family in the human genome[3]. Like other olfactory receptors, OR8H2 has a canonical structure with seven transmembrane domains and is primarily responsible for the recognition of odorant molecules in the nose, initiating neuronal responses that lead to the perception of smell[3]. These proteins activate G protein-mediated signal transduction upon binding specific odorant ligands, but the specific ligands and physiological roles of OR8H2 remain poorly characterized in the scientific literature[3][4]. Olfactory receptors as a class have significant diversity and structural complexity, which allows the human olfactory system to detect a wide array of odorants, but the exact binding partners and functional contributions of many individual family members (including OR8H2) are not fully understood[1][4]. As of now, OR8H2 is not associated with a defined disease, is not a therapeutic target of any approved drugs, and is not used as a biomarker in clinical practice[3].
