Overview

Olfactory receptor family 8 subfamily J member 2 (OR8J2) is a member of the olfactory receptor gene family, the largest gene family in the human genome[1][7]. Olfactory receptors, including OR8J2, are G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) with a characteristic 7-transmembrane domain structure that interact with odorant molecules in the nasal epithelium to initiate neuronal signals involved in the perception of smell[1][5][8]. OR8J2 is a segregating pseudogene, meaning some individuals possess a functional copy while others carry a nonfunctional version[1]. There is no evidence that OR8J2 is a disease-associated or pharmacologically actionable target, nor are there any known ligands or drugs that interact with it[1][5]. The main biological function is limited to odor detection, and there is no established role as a biomarker or involvement in disease aside from possible genetic variation conferring differences in odor perception[1][5][7].\n- OR8J2 is often classified as a pseudogene, so may not produce a functional protein in all individuals[1].\n- It is not currently considered a therapeutic target, nor are there known drugs or safety concerns associated with it[1][7].\n- Its main importance is limited to sensation of smell, with no non-olfactory biological or disease associations established.
