Overview

Olfactory receptor family 8 subfamily K member 1 (OR8K1) is a **G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR)** that is part of the human olfactory system, encoded by the OR8K1 gene. It is one of a very large family of olfactory receptors, each arising from single coding-exon genes[1][3][6]. OR8K1, like other olfactory receptors, interacts with odorant molecules in the nasal epithelium and triggers a neuronal response through G protein-mediated transduction, ultimately resulting in the perception of smell[1][3][4]. Olfactory receptors share a characteristic **7-transmembrane domain structure** with other neurotransmitter and hormone receptors[1][3]. OR8K1's function is highly specific to sensory olfaction, and there is currently **no evidence for clinically approved drugs or biomarkers targeting this receptor**, nor is it implicated in drug mechanism or used in therapeutic monitoring[6][5]. While a few extranasal roles for olfactory receptors have been proposed, OR8K1 itself is understood primarily as a sensory GPCR for odor detection.
