Olfactory receptor family 8 subfamily K member 5 (OR8K5) is a member of the large olfactory receptor gene family, which encodes G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) characterized by seven transmembrane domains[6][7]. OR8K5 is expressed primarily in the olfactory epithelium and participates in the detection of odorant molecules, working as the initial transducer of chemical signals into neuronal responses that are ultimately perceived as smell[7]. While olfactory receptors are predominantly found in the nose for the recognition of diverse odorants, recent research highlights that some members of this family are also present in nonolfactory tissues and may have additional physiological functions[5]. No specific drugs, biomarkers, or disease associations are established for OR8K5, and it is not currently considered a therapeutic drug target in clinical contexts.
Ligand (odorant) binding leads to activation of associated G proteins, initiating a signaling cascade for sensory perception[3][6][7]
