Overview

Olfactory receptor family 8 subfamily S member 1 (OR8S1) is a G protein-coupled receptor expressed in the olfactory epithelium, where it recognizes and binds specific odorant molecules, initiating a G protein-mediated signaling cascade that results in neuronal activation and the perception of smell. OR8S1, like other olfactory receptors, has a seven-transmembrane domain structure and is encoded by a single coding-exon gene. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest family in the human genome. Current evidence supports a primary role in olfactory function, though some research suggests possible physiological activities in other tissues, yet no role as a drug target, disease biomarker, or safety concern is established for this specific receptor[1][3][4][5][6].
