Overview

Olfactory receptor family 8 subfamily U member 1 (OR8U1) is a protein that belongs to the large family of olfactory receptors, which are G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) expressed in the olfactory epithelium of the nose[7][4][5][6]. These receptors are responsible for the recognition and binding of odorant molecules, initiating neuronal signals that lead to the perception of smell[7][4][5]. Like other olfactory receptors, OR8U1 possesses a canonical seven-transmembrane domain structure characteristic of GPCRs. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome, with each member generally arising from a single coding-exon gene and displaying a unique ligand-binding profile[7][4]. There is currently no evidence implicating OR8U1 specifically in human disease, nor are there known selective drugs, clinical biomarkers, or notable therapeutic safety concerns associated with this receptor[5][7].
