Overview

Olfactory receptor family 8 subfamily U member 3 (OR8U3) is a member of the human olfactory receptor gene family, the largest gene family in the human genome. It encodes a canonical G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) with seven transmembrane domains, similar to neurotransmitter and hormone receptors, and mediates signal transduction after odorant binding. However, OR8U3 is a segregating pseudogene in humans: some individuals possess a functional allele, while others only have a non-functional (pseudogenized) version. In the context of the human genome, it is not considered a therapeutic target because its gene product's primary role is limited to smell perception, and as a polymorphic pseudogene, its functional relevance varies widely across the population. It is not targeted by drugs, does not serve as a biomarker, and has no known safety concerns or direct links to disease pathology beyond genomic association findings. This molecule's characterization as a polymorphic pseudogene should be noted when interpreting its biological and clinical relevance
