Olfactory receptor family 9 subfamily A member 1 pseudogene (OR9A1P) is a non-functional copy of an olfactory receptor gene, part of the largest gene family in the human genome. Olfactory receptor proteins are typically responsible for detecting odorant molecules via G protein-coupled signaling in the cell membranes of sensory neurons, triggering neuronal impulses that result in the perception of smell. However, as a pseudogene, OR9A1P does not encode a functional protein and therefore does not participate directly in sensory or signaling processes[1][2][4]. Pseudogenization of olfactory receptors is common in humans; evolutionary changes have resulted in many olfactory receptor genes becoming nonfunctional, possibly due to reduced reliance on olfaction in primates[2]. OR9A1P shares sequence similarity and family membership with other functional olfactory receptors and may have regulatory or evolutionary significance, but it is not a therapeutic or pharmacological target.
