Overview

Olfactory receptor family 9 subfamily A member 4 (OR9A4) is a human protein responsible for recognizing odorant molecules in the nasal epithelium and initiating neuronal responses that result in the perception of smell[1][3][4]. OR9A4, like other olfactory receptors, is a member of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily and possesses a canonical seven-transmembrane domain structure[1][2][3]. These receptors are encoded by a large gene family, with each receptor gene typically arising from a single coding exon. Upon binding specific odorant molecules, OR9A4 triggers intracellular signaling pathways via G proteins, ultimately resulting in the propagation of olfactory signals to the brain[1][3][4]. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome. Although the primary function of OR9A4 appears to be in olfaction, there is some evidence of involvement in non-olfactory pathways, including a potential association with lung carcinoma in situ[3]. There are currently no known direct pharmacological agents or approved drugs targeting OR9A4.
